Goodbye balmy summer days, hello a fresh fall season! While we loved all the summer events we attended and planned, Autumn has arrived, and with our favorite season comes a myriad of exciting new entertaining opportunities. We’re living for autumnal palettes and divine outdoor days in the cool air, and are looking forward to all of the upcoming celebrations that will center around spending quality time with loved ones. Here are some of our favorite ways to entertain during this time of the year.

In autumn, we brunch

Just because we won’t be seeing summer for a while doesn’t mean outdoor entertaining is off the table. Autumn is a fantastic time to host an outdoor brunch event since the mornings are cooler (and we’re keeping a keen eye on the fashion trends that come with Autumn brunching — share your ‘fits with us!). A seasonal menu with fall-inspired items pair perfectly with a brunch affair. For an Autumn brunch, consider including these delectable goodies on your menu:

  • Pumpkin spice lattes when guests arrive or to accompany dessert

  • Waffles with maple syrup pipettes

  • Persimmon parfaits

  • Apple crumb muffins

  • Slow-cooked pork mini crock-pots served in a little ceramic dish

Pretty-up some pumpkins

How about a “punch and pumpkin painting party” with your friends and family instead of carving pumpkins? We were so inspired when we stumbled across Mica May’s DIY pumpkin decorating workshops. The owner of May Designs hosts get-togethers where anyone, young or young at heart, can get creative with their pumpkins. From marble-dripped pumpkins to transforming them into decorative items, this is a superb way to get more use out of your seasonal decor and make your pumpkins last Halloween to Thanksgiving. We also love the idea of creating your own mod podge to transform pumpkins with dainty pressed florals for a more sustainable approach, like the ones we stumbled upon on Cariuma Planet’s Instagram. By choosing neutral or metallic tones, you will find that your pieces seamlessly complement both holiday occasions. And since no party is complete without a festive beverage, we recommend creating a delicious punch, which is having a moment BTW, to keep things entertaining.

Prepping for Thanksgiving & Friendsgiving

If we could offer one piece of advice for effortless entertaining, it’s to start early! There are several details you can prepare in advance, which will allow you to be more present during the holiday and avoid the stress that comes with being in a time crunch.

There’s no better excuse to freshen up your plate and flatware collection than when preparing for an elegant Thanksgiving event. By getting a head-start on purchasing accents to add to a flawless Thanksgiving tablescape, you can shorten your to-do list as the holiday hustle-and-bustle picks up, and these entertaining essentials can then be re-used for future intimate events.

To add a special and personal touch to your preparations, consider creating a charming digital invitation that you can easily send out for both Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving — we love using the HiNote app to do this! Their elevated, pre-designed templates are easy to personalize and a breeze text or email with the click of a button.

We also recommend creating your playlist in advance. This activity is an engaging way to get excited for upcoming gatherings and you can even make the playlist collaborative by inviting your friends and family to add their favorite tunes. For your Friendsgiving affair, opt for mellow acoustic background music and an oh-so-wholesome menu that can be enjoyed over lots of laughter and giving thanks. Then, to combat the tryptophan takeover, ramp up the energy with nostalgic classics that everyone will enjoy.

It’s one of our favorite months of the year, which means there’s no shortage of limited-time obsessions to discuss. Although we love a seasonal sip as much as everyone else, spoiler alert: no PSL plugs here. Not unlike our fall Starbucks order, customized indulgences and luxe layers find their place on the list by way of fashion, décor, and a buzzing social calendar. Looks like September is ready to spice things up.

1 | You’re rarely at a loss for words and lucky for you, there has never been a better time to make a statement with your knits, thanks to personalized, bespoke sweaters from brands like Lingua Franca and Le Lion. Don your initials, a favorite saying, or your political point of view on a cozy crew that is sure to speak volumes this fall.

2 | With the season for entertaining upon us, it’s time to polish up your cherished heirlooms and layer in a mix of tabletop décor pieces that can weather any whirlwind family gathering. Wondering where to get the designer look that still lets you relax and actually enjoy being the host? Enter Target, our favorite one-stop-shop, who comes to the rescue as they celebrate the 20th Anniversary of their Design for All collaborations by reissuing some of their most-loved products from twenty iconic design partners. Load your cart with exclusive items from the likes of Marimekko, John Derian Company, and Missoni; all coveted pieces that we will be lining up for when the collection hits stores September 14.

3 | All eyes will be on New York Fashion Week this fall, as they debut a new format and reimagine the iconic biannual event. Shaking things up is new CFDA President and fashion rebel Tom Ford, who has introduced a more condensed schedule, an increased focus on sustainability initiatives, and fresh locations that will combat any front row fatigue. With Tom’s goal to reestablish NYFW as a premier leader in the industry’s global market, we say it’s up to you, New York, New York.

4 | The closest you ever thought you’d get to your favorite NFL players is your fantasy football draft, but gridiron superstar JJ Watt is about to make you level up with a chance to win a dream prize package while supporting his namesake charitable foundation. One lucky winner will receive a trip for four to Houston to meet the guy whose heart is as big as his biceps, a $100,000 cash prize, and a brand-new Ford F-150 Raptor. The play clock in winding down before Omaze picks the receiver: ready, set, give!

5 | September ushers in the return of gala season and the philanthropic Austin community remerges in their couture to attend Ballet Austin’s fête and fête*ish event, a highlight of the social calendar. Each year, guests are transported into a whimsical wonderland full of fanciful delights to accompany the launch of the ballet’s performance season. With featured works including Carmina Burana, Snow White, and the perennial Nutcracker, the 2019-2020 season, along with another edition of their signature event, will undoubtedly be on pointe.

It’s been a fantastic summer events season. Producing some knockout outdoor summer affairs and attending memorable gatherings in exciting destinations have given us a renewed love for this time of year. While the season may soon be coming to a close, we’re breaking down the best ways to squeeze in a few more moments of fun in the sun with these end-of-summer party ideas.

1. Throw a Themed Party

Everything feels more fun in summer, right? A theme will properly fête the end of summer and usher it out on a high note! When you pair everyone’s favorite season of leisure with a timely dress-up element, you will undoubtedly get your guests feeling festive and ready to party surrounded by their favorite people before cooler weather hits. Consider these approachable themes that are all fun and no fuss:

  • Country club-themed party: think tennis attire, playful menus, Pimm’s cups, and strawberries and cream (Bonus points for pairing this with a US Open watch party!)

  • Fiesta party: salvage the last bits of warmth with brightly colored attire, delicious spicy margaritas, and freshly made salsa dips

  • Garden party: bring the party to you with an intimate outdoor gathering with your nearest and dearest

2. A Summer Brunch

Kicking things off in the midday sun is one of the best ways to cling to the last few summery moments. An al fresco brunch spent with your closest friends and family, raising your glasses to savoring leisurely meals (Think Italy on holiday vibes), is the perfect way to celebrate the end of summer. Consider a menu showcasing the vibrant fruits and vegetables we crave when summer arrives. You can even incorporate hand-illustrated designs onto the event menu or invitations for a whimsical play on seasonal ingredients. Welcome your guests with an enticing chilled beverage — it’s peak spritz and frosé season, after all!

3. Not Your Average Barbeque

Barbeque, but make it luxury.

Barbeques are a staple summer hosting event, but let’s elevate it to give guests a taste of the unexpected. Ditch the usual sticky BBQ chicken and consider hiring a hibachi and chef for an interactive, high-energy experience that guests will remember. Create a gorgeous tablescape that mimics the feel of a communal feast with abundant family-style accouterments and luxurious toppings peppered down the table- enjoying the inviting and convivial spirit of a BBQ is always a treat!

4. Host an Outdoor Cocktail Party

You can’t go wrong with a cocktail party. An outdoor bar set in your garden is not only practical but also brings a sophisticated aesthetic to an outside event. Make the dress code smart-casual with an emphasis on sundresses and coastal grandma chic attire to give summer a stunning send-off. You could even consider specifying a color palette in your invitations to achieve an Instagram-worthy moment. Keep things crisp and simple: classic summer staples go a long way. We suggest topping off your bar with a large-scale arrangement of seasonal blooms and freshly-sourced garnishes that are synonymous with memories of fun in the sun.
